Tell us about your journey to becoming a photographer. What inspired you along the way?
I started my creative journey in 2009 as an owner and designer of a contemporary fashion brand. I styled and shot a lot of my lookbooks and campaigns out of necessity due to having a limited budget. At the time, I never thought I’d want to pursue photography as a career. But I loved the process of creating the theme and story of each collection, collaborating with a creative team, and then seeing the overall vision manifest through beautiful imagery.
After a few years of solopreneur burnout, I pivoted careers and landed a position at a photography agency in Venice. During this time I was inspired by how photography can be used for more than commercial purposes. It’s an art form, a tool for storytelling, and connecting. Since 2016, I’ve been pursuing photography full-time and so grateful to have this my dream career!
How has your environment influenced your perspective?
I was born in Manila, Philippines and been very lucky enough to travel and experience different cities, cultures, and ways of living. This has been important in forming my personal perspective. Even though I’ve lived in Los Angeles for over twenty years, it still endlessly inspires me from the diverse landscapes and people. I also believe it’s one of the best cities to live in as a creative! I’m pretty much influenced by the sunny weather and laid-back lifestyle. A few years ago, I learned that palm trees are not native to this city. So it resonates with me as a non-native Angeleno. Palm trees symbolize home, paradise, and how one can thrive in a city filled with other amazing transplants
Can you tell us a bit about Nature and Intent and what it means to you?
Nature Intent is a conscious creative consultancy working closely with purpose-driven brands to develop authentic content, elevated experiences, and aligned partnerships. My intention is that our work and partnerships create a meaningful impact for the collective good. I believe the intention or the "why" behind a brand is the driving force that will attract aligned customers and build a meaningful business. "Nature and Intent" is connecting intention with our authentic essence.
What is your philosophy on travel and wellness?
Traveling for me is a form of spiritual self-care. It expands me to widen my perspective, practice patience, navigate challenges and experience different cultures and ways of living. Being born from another country already gave me this foundational perspective, but travel allows me to cultivate a widened world view regularly. Living in Los Angeles, the mecca of wellness, there’s an abundance of different health modalities and holistic resources. In what I call the “spectrum of wellness,” one end is superficial while the other is deeply spiritual. Wellness means something different to each individual and that’s perfectly fine. I’m open to experiencing the whole spectrum even though I lean more towards spiritual practices. My wellness routines are rooted in ancient traditions like Ayurveda, Cha Dao Tea, and Meditation. Aligning with nature has been a journey inward and a way to connect to my higher power, the Universe.
What are some mantras/quotes/notions that you live by?
My dream is to master time management, efficiency, and organization. I mean who doesn’t? I have so many ideas and very high expectations for myself. If I struggle or get stressed from juggling multiple projects and expectations, it can be difficult for me to surrender and accept. A quote I found that has helped me recently is, “Nature doesn't hurry yet everything is accomplished.”
At Brochu Walker we believe the details matter; what are the small things in life that matter to you?
I believe attention to detail adds so much value to anything. This can apply to non-tangibles and experiences with others. For me, the small gestures and people leading with integrity are small things that matter. Being polite, expressing gratitude, and respecting others even if they can’t do anything for you are simple acts yet so meaningful.
What are the details of Brochu Walker pieces that you appreciate?
I love the quality of this new collection. Love all the knits, the versatility of styles and will be wearing as staples this Fall!
How would you say your style has evolved over time?
My personal style has become more edited and minimal because I am more mindful of what I consume. I shop less but with more intention. I love repeating outfits and wearing garments that are classic yet versatile
What are you most comfortable wearing?
I love wearing dresses, casual linens, and jeans. I layer when it gets a bit cooler and generally just wear pieces that are comfortable and functional.
Who are the women that have helped shape your path?
I’ve been fortunate to have amazing women as both clients and friends in my life. They inspire me so much! Personally, I am inspired by so many different individuals and experiences. The collective inspires my journey rather than a few select individuals. But I do find that my closest friends and I will often meet-up with our outfits matching unintentionally. It just shows how connected we are inside and out.
What empowers you?
My core values, deep empathy for others and conscious contribution motivate me. I think personal style extends outside of our garments. It’s part of our nonverbal communication of who we are and our “Nature and Intent.” Sometimes it’s difficult to describe in words but better experienced.
